KINWAI SHUM

Pianist Kinwai Shum has played numerous recitals in Europe, North America and Far East Asia, and has performed as a concerto soloist with the Dortmund Philharmonic and the Hong Kong Symphonia, among others. He was invited to perform and teach in the Indiana University Summer Music Festival, Lancaster International Piano Festival, both in the US, and the Yeoncheon DMZ International Music Festival in Korea. He has recorded many programs for the Radio 4 of the Radio Television Hong Kong. His allSchubert album was released by Universal Music in 2014 with rave reviews.Kinwai was awarded the third prize in the 4th Hilton Head International Piano Competition in the US in 1999, the fourth prize in the 11th Schubert International Piano Competition in Dortmund, Germany in 2007, and the audience prize in the 20th New Orleans International Piano Competition in the US in 2008. He was presented the Certificate of Commendation by the Secretary for Home Affairs, the Government of Hong Kong in 2008, and the Distinguished Young Pianist Award by the Hong Kong Piano Music Association in 2009. He is the awardee of the 2013 Ten Outstanding Young Persons in Hong Kong.Born in Hong Kong, Kinwai was a junior student of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts where he studied with Eva Lue. He completed a master’s degree of music in piano performance at the Eastman School of Music under the guidance of Douglas Humpherys. He later studied with Edward Auer at the Indiana University at Bloomington, and with Jörg Demus.He currently teaches at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Hong Kong Bapist University, and the Education University of Hong Kong where he is an Honorary Artist-in-residence.
